Give Us This Day . . .

Bread seems to have made a comeback through its seeded, whole grain, nut-enriched varieties. For so many years it was considered “fattening.” However, as the adage says, “Bread is the staff of life;”

A staff is a pole for the journey, giving a sense of stability, a sense of comfort, and something to lean on when the going gets rugged.  Maybe Jesus had this in mind when he said, “I am the Bread of Life.”

Whether bread is physical or appears in the form of words of peace and encouragement, it nourishes our weary being. That first Easter as two disciples trudged to Emmaus, they did not recognize Jesus walking with them, until the breaking of the bread.

What about us as we Journey together in sometimes disappointing circumstances or when the path seems blocked or hidden? That might be a good time to stop and pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”  Or use the Aramaic translation, “Grow through us this moment’s bread and wisdom.”

Blessings and the “Staff of Life” be with you as continue your Journey.    -Jackie F
