South Hayward Parish (SHP)

One of the most beloved of our UCH outreaches is South Hayward Parish, a service which UCH and several other churches in the area had enough foresight and compassion to bring into being over 50 years ago.

Notice that the logo has changed.  If you look closely, you will see what appears to be a heart and some “scribbles.” The logo actually forms the initials SHP.  Designing these letters into a heart-shaped symbol is truly a brilliant creative way of expressing what SHP is all about – reaching out to others with love and practical support.

During the day, SHP offers: a food pantry, job counseling, a place to receive mail, shower facilities, and a gathering space to visit, watch TV or read.  Overnight shelter services include a hot meal in the evening and breakfast the following morning.

Volunteers are the backbone of South Hayward Parish. They do everything from putting food out, manning tables and distributing, to translating and helping guests register. SHP is always on the hunt for volunteers to join their crew! All ages welcome.

Their food pantry is operated through partnership with Alameda County, the City of Hayward, and food recovery programs throughout the Bay Area! Volunteers help keep the shelter running by prepacking food, moving pallets, and doing distribution.

Here are some Volunteer opportunities at SHP:

  • Food Distribution - Set up and clean up tables for distribution, move food to and from the staging area and the distribution area and monitor tables to make sure guests are served. (Please dress for the weather as this volunteer position is outdoors.)

  • Bring Meals – SHP really appreciates anyone who would like to help with meals at the shelter! SHP Shelter is in need of both breakfast for 20 people and dinner for 35. Dinners reimbursable with receipts - more info in link on website.

  • Shelter Dinner Help - Help serve dinner at the shelter, and meet some great people in your community in the process!

  • Shower Monitor - Volunteers in this position help with their shower program - they may help monitor the shower list, distribute bagged lunches, and clean the stall between guests.
